Tandem Paragliding

Paragliding is a foot-launched, non-motorized form of free flying that uses a lightweight, inflatable wing. Paragliding doesn’t require jumping off cliffs, mountains, or aeroplanes, unlike other extreme sports, nor does it involve pulling by boat, car or any other motorised vehicle. To fly, the wing is inflated by the air entering its interconnected cells, giving it an aerodynamic shape. After this, the pilot takes a few steps down a slope and is lifted into the air. The pilot then sits in a harness suspended from the wing by multiple lines. Anyone can experience paragliding on a tandem flight with an experienced and qualified instructor. During a tandem flight, the instructor pilot can fly with one passenger using a tandem wing designed to carry two people, with the passenger strapped in a separate harness in front of the pilot.

Each tandem flight is unique, but we’ll outline what you can expect for your day. Once you arrive at the meeting point, we’ll drive to the flying location best suited for the current weather conditions. There are multiple takeoff points around Vik so that you can enjoy the beautiful views of the area, and we can choose a suitable location depending on the weather, increasing your chances of flying.

At the takeoff site, your safety is our top priority. We’ll provide a comprehensive briefing on the flight details, including a thorough explanation of the equipment and safety procedures. After a safety check, we’re ready for takeoff. All you need to do is run a few steps down a gentle slope, and then you can sit back and enjoy your flight. Depending on your comfort level, the weather conditions, and the area where we fly, your instructor may offer you the opportunity to handle the controls during the flight. However, if you prefer to relax and admire the scenery, that’s perfectly fine, too. Our main goal is to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

Above all, our main objective is for you to have a good time and create lasting memories during your tandem paragliding experience.

Almost anyone who has reached our age and weight limit and is reasonably fit and in good health can learn to paraglide. As with most outdoor activities, there are a few common sense exceptions, so if you are in doubt, please consult your doctor before deciding to fly. Your first free flight experience will be an introductory tandem paragliding flight.

Many people face the challenge of overcoming their fear of heights. However, when it comes to flying, most find that their anxiety disappears once they are airborne. Flying is a comfortable and enjoyable experience, like looking through an aeroplane window. If you’re reading this, it means you’re interested in flying, and we’re here to make it a reality. If anything worries you, please let us know beforehand so we can ensure that your experience is safe and enjoyable.

Suppose the weather conditions are favourable and there are few other bookings on the day. The entire experience should take about an hour, including the meeting, preparation, instructions, and flight. However, we may need to change the flight location due to weather conditions. Therefore, it’s best to keep a good part of the day or the whole day free to enjoy the flight better. We constantly check the weather in the evening and the morning before the flight, and we suggest you call us at +354 698 8890 around 8 pm the night before to check the weather situation.

We aim to provide a paragliding flight experience that lasts 15 to 20 minutes, depending on various factors such as wind conditions, strength and direction. The duration also depends on the passenger’s comfort and reactions to the experience. This duration is ideal, especially for first-time flyers. Our primary goal is to make the experience enjoyable for you. If you are comfortable and willing to spend more time in the air, we will extend the duration of the flight. However, the duration is just one of the many factors that can make a tandem flight a great experience. The total experience, from ride to take-off, getting ready, instructions, safety check, putting on safety gear, etc., is about 1 hour.

If we have to cut your flight short due to unfavourable weather conditions, we will arrange a second flight for you as soon as possible, provided the weather permits. We recommend you keep a significant part of the day free to enjoy the best weather conditions. Sometimes, we may need to wait for the weather to improve or change the site to enhance your experience.

If you want to fly again immediately after your pre-booked flight, we will do our best to accommodate your request. However, this will depend on the weather conditions and availability of pilots. You can speak to your pilot, and we will offer you a special rate for your second flight.

We offer paragliding flights every day of the week from May to September, as this is the best season for paragliding in Iceland. During this time, the weather is milder, and the winds are usually fair, making it easier to enjoy a fantastic glide in the sky. Additionally, the summer months have longer days and shorter nights so we can fly well into the night. If you want to experience the midnight sun from high above, we can make your dream come true.

Paragliding, like any other aviation activity, depends heavily on the weather. Although we would love for everyone to experience the thrill and freedom of free flight, we prioritise safety. We will never take unnecessary risks if conditions are not suitable for flying. Therefore, we recommend that you check with us the night before your flight and be prepared to be patient, as we may need to wait or visit multiple sites to find the best conditions. However, if luck is on our side and the winds and clouds are favourable, all the waiting will be well worth it.

True Adventure Paragliding is located at Víkurbraut 5, in Vík í Mýrdal, South Iceland. You can check the map for directions. The building is shared with companies like The Soup Company, Icelandic Lava Show, Zipline Iceland, and Tröll Expeditions. In case of bad weather, we will notify you if we need to change the meeting location.

Safety, Preperation & equipment

Our students must meet specific requirements to participate in our paragliding classes. They must weigh between 30 and 120 kg and be 12 years old. However, we may make an exception for children between the ages of 8 and 12 if they have shown a remarkable interest in flying and the weather conditions are incredibly light and favourable. For young people under 18, we require written parental consent to fly with us.

It’s worth noting that the weight limitations for our paragliding equipment are certified, which determines these limitations. There are no official restrictions on height, but you must be able to fit comfortably in the harness. We have never had a case in which a person within the safe weight limit was uncomfortable with the harness.

Please note that there might be some walking involved to and from the takeoff and landing points during your paragliding experience. Additionally, you will need to run briefly for around 20 meters when taking off and landing. If you are physically fit enough to handle this, you should have no problem enjoying your first paragliding adventure. Please be aware that you only need to take a few steps during takeoff and landing, and you’ll be comfortably seated in the harness for the entire flight. We always do our best to accommodate the needs of all of our guests, so if you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us before your flight.

When you fly with us, you will be accompanied by a qualified tandem instructor who will ensure the wing is flying smoothly before takeoff. We will then take off from a slope with the help of the wind and glide through the air like birds. During takeoff and landing, you will be required to run for a short distance, but no jumping or acrobatics will be involved.

Paragliding is a relatively safe sport when compared to other recreational activities. The safety of all individuals involved in paragliding largely depends on the flight’s timing. Our team of experienced instructors are well-equipped to evaluate weather conditions and will only permit flights when it is inevitable that safety will be protected.

The quickest and most convenient way to book a tour with us is to visit our website, www.trueadventure.is, select your preferred date and type of tour, and proceed with the online booking. This way, your booking with us is guaranteed. We offer tours in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Still, we suggest you keep your schedule flexible for the day if we need to adjust the timing or the sites to visit due to unfavourable weather conditions. Please call us at +354 698 8890 around 8 pm the night before the tour to check the weather.

We strongly believe that South Iceland and the region of Vík are among the best places in the world to experience your first flight. The breathtaking natural beauty and spectacular views, combined with generally favourable conditions, make this a perfect location for first-time paragliding enthusiasts and experienced pilots or students seeking to further their skills.

Several accommodation options, including hotels, hostels, and a campsite, are available in Vik for different budgets. However, since the town is relatively small and gets very crowded during the summer, booking your stay well in advance would be best. If you have a car (either rental or your own), you can also make a day trip to Vik from Reykjavik and return.

Vik is an excellent location to explore South Iceland. You can easily walk to the beautiful Reynisfjara black sand beach, which offers stunning views of the basalt rock columns (Gardar) and the Reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks in the water. The Dyrholaey peninsula is also nearby and provides a magnificent view of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which caps the Katla volcano to the north, Reynisdrangar to the east, and even Selfoss and the coastline to the west if the skies are clear. If you have a car, you can explore further and visit Skogarfoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, Solheimajokull Glacier to the west, and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and the Vatnajokull region to the east.

We offer a successful zipline experience, and you can get a great deal on a combo package. Also mountain bikes, hikes, and Katla Ice cave tours. In Vík, the catering industry is booming, and new cafes and restaurants keep popping up. Most of them serve delicious food.

The weather in Iceland is known for its unpredictability, even during the summer season. It is best to dress appropriately and wear layers to ensure comfort, as temperatures fluctuate throughout the day. It is recommended to wear multiple layers of clothing instead of just a few thick items. Also, have a water and windproof top layer, thin gloves, and a hat that can fit under your helmet. Proper footwear is also crucial, and it is essential to wear shoes that provide good ankle support to avoid injuries during takeoff and landing. Hiking boots are an excellent option, while trainers or other footwear with slippery soles should be avoided.
